Q: I have a question regarding the descendants of Edom. In Joel Rosenberg’s novel The Ezekiel Option, some Iranians claim that they are descended from the Edomites and that Iran is in danger of God’s judgment upon the edomites. Are some Iranians descended from Edom? And if so, could Obadiahs prophecy against Edom be a warning for Iran? Thanks for your ministry and God bless.
xxx/ellauri114.html on line 384: A: The Iranians are the modern day Persians who originated in Elam, not Edom. Edom was the birthplace of the Ammonites and the Moabites and was later inhabited by the family of Esau, Jacob’s brother. Edom got its name from Esau, and is called Jordan today. Elam was located further east on the other side of Iraq, where Iran is today. Obadiah prophesied against the Edomites who were driven out of their capital (Petra) by the Nabateans, a Bedouin people descended from Ishmael, in fulfillment of Obadiah’s prophecy. Many believe that during the Great Tribulation, the Jordanians will hide believing Jews in Petra where God will protect them against the anti-Christ. The area is called Bosrah in Isaiah 63.

Ashkenaz is the first son of Gomer, and a Japhetic patriarch in the Table of Nations. In rabbinic literature, the kingdom of Ashkenaz was first associated with the Scythian region, then later with the Slavic territories, and, from the 11th century on, in a manner similar to Tzarfat or Sefarad. Tzarfat (Hebrew: צרפת) is a Biblical placename that may refer to Sarepta in Lebanon. In later times, it came to be identified with France. It is still the name of France in Modern Hebrew, and is analogous to Sefarad, and Ashkenaz. Sepharad (/ˈsɛfəræd/ or /səˈfɛərəd/; Hebrew: סְפָרַד Səpāraḏ; also Sefarad, Sephared, Sfard) is the Hebrew name for Spain. A place called Sepharad, probably referring to Sardis in Lydia ('Sfard' in Lydian), in the Book of Obadiah (Obadiah 1:20, 6th century BC) of the Hebrew Bible. The name was later applied to Spain and is analogous to Tzarfat or Ashkenaz.

Minor Prophets Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
xxx/ellauri446.html on line 349: Obadja eli Gottschalk, mie on teidän palavelii. Obadja oli Ahabin hovimestari. Exuding a noble charm, Obadiah is a Hebrew masculine name with far humbler roots. A man who hid a hundred prophets and received the gift of prophecy in return. Bible scholars give Obadiah mixed reviews. Some see him as a believer who was “doing the best he could in a bad situation.” After all, they say, he did risk his life to save the prophets of the Lord from Queen Jezebel. Mutta Obadja väpelöi kuin Ilja käski mennä kertomaan Ahabille Iljan whereabouts.
xxx/ellauri446.html on line 351: What’s your opinion of Obadiah? Was Obadiah a “good guy” or a “bad guy”?
xxx/ellauri446.html on line 355: Partial commitment: Obadiah.
xxx/ellauri446.html on line 359: The Book of Obadiah, a short prophetic book in the Hebrew Bible, prophesies the downfall of Edom, a neighboring kingdom to Israel, and the eventual restoration of Judah.
xxx/ellauri446.html on line 361: The book of Obadiah, written by a prophet named Obadiah, is the shortest book in the Old Testament, only 21 verses. The Book of Obadiah was likely written between 848 and 840 BC, following an invasion of the Philistines and Arabians.
xxx/ellauri446.html on line 364: The majority of the book pronounces judgment on foreign nations, making Obadiah one of only three prophets who pronounced judgment primarily on other nations (Nahum and Habakkuk are the others). How does Obadiah’s condemnation of Edom apply to us today? Jordania, Palestine, Iraq and Arabs think themselves greater than they actually are; great enough to mock, steal from, and even harm God’s chosen people. But the “Lord GOD,” a name Obadiah used to stress God’s sovereign power over the nations, will not stand idly by and let His people suffer forever (1:1). Obadiah’s message is final and it is sure: the kingdom of Edom will be destroyed completely, as will Gaza.
