Elokuva tekee tämän asenteen selväksi; esimerkiksi Kelvinin matka maaseudulta kaupunkiin vaihtuu väristä mustavalkoiseen elokuvaan ja hämärään, varjoisaan valaistukseen; kun taas hänen matkansa Solarikseen näyttää Kelvinin ruumiittomassa muodossa, avaruuspuvussa, joka on lukittu liikkumattomaksi kapselin sisään, jyrkässä ristiriidassa "todellisemman" Kelvinin kanssa, jonka olemme juuri nähneet maan päällä. Kaikkia mahdollisia elokuvatekniikoita käytetään siihen, että maanpäällisen luonnon otokset erottuvat elokuvan ainoina todella kauniina ja viattomina kuvina. Se on hyvin epäamerikkalaista! Me amerikkalaiset viihdymme epäviihtyisässä: asfalttiviidakoissa, kivierämaissa ja muovisissa kulisseissa McDonaldsissa. Ja vitut filosofiasta, meitä kiinnostaa vaan EFK!
